Linder left Fury’s apartment feeling profoundly discouraged. His old friend, once a genuine force of nature, seemed burnt out. How could he have relied upon so flawed a character as Fury for so long without seeing it? Yet who else could have taken Fury’s place in the movement? No one. And then a thought hit Linder that made him shudder. What if he, too, might end up like Fury someday, played out, a pale vestige of who and what he had once been?

That night, while he and Annabel were at dinner, someone gave the couple’s hotel suite a systematic search. The tripwires that Linder had left on their laptops, dresser drawers, luggage and among their papers had all been disturbed. While most items remained in place and none of their possessions appeared to be missing, the fact that someone had gained access to their rooms in a five-star Paris hotel worried Linder. Was it the DSS, or Fury’s team, or possibly the League? When Linder took Annabel out onto the balcony to tell her what he had detected, she blanched.

“Must they really dog us so, wherever we go?” she complained.

Linder had no answer.

The next morning, while eating a room-service breakfast, he received a phone call from an unidentified number. Despite a fleeting apprehension, he put it through. The call was from Doris Geiger.

“I’m calling to let you know that our flat is being watched this morning. I would advise against coming. It may be dangerous for you.”

“Thanks. I’ll take it under consideration,” Linder replied.

He went there anyway.

Geiger answered the door. There was no mistaking the cold malice in her eyes as she opened it just wide enough to speak.

“Mr. Fury says he’s not in the office today,” she sneered, her stiff posture as unwelcoming as her voice.

“Fine. Please tell him I’m here, anyway.”

“He’s sleeping.”

“Then wake him up.”

“No. Come back tomorrow. Or, better yet, don’t come at all.”

Then she shut the door in his face.

Linder considered making a scene but decided against it. Instead, he wondered why he had even bothered to come.
